About Kendall College

The college itself was founded in 1934 in Evanston, Illinois. In 2004, Kendall moved to its current location in Chicago. The campus includes a 100-year-old, eight-story building that was renovated by the Sara Lee Corporation in 1999. In addition to award-winning faculty like Michael Artlip (American Culinary Federation, Inc. 2007 Central Regional Educator of the Year), expert guests visit the campus to share their skills and expertise.

About the B.A. in Culinary Arts Program

Kendall College offers several degrees in the culinary field. The BA in Culinary Arts is a four-year program that emphasizes hands-on experience. The beginning student will learn basic cooking techniques and ingredients and will move on to international cuisine in the Junior and Senior years.

From the very first quarter of attendance, students spend time in Kendall College's kitchens where they learn and hone their skills. Another important aspect of the BA in Culinary Arts is the focus on the skills needed to plan and run a food-related business.

About the Associate Degree in Culinary Arts Program

The Associate degree in Culinary Arts is a two-year program that combines cooking and business management in order to fully prepare students to be competitive in the workplace. During the final quarter of this degree, students cook in the European-style kitchen of Kendall's fine-dining facility.

Those who have earned the AAS in Culinary Arts are encouraged to continue on to earn their BAs. For those who already have a Bachelor's degree, the AAS Accelerated Culinary Arts degree offers much of the same education in five quarters.

About the Associate Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts Program

Kendall College is also home to a state-of-the-art bakeshop and offers an Associate degree in Baking and Pastry Arts. The hands-on curriculum of the degree includes a variety of techniques like mixing and shaping. Both basic and creative baking skills are emphasized in the program. Each quarter builds upon those already completed in order to best prepare students to either move into a career in a pastry kitchen or to continue on to earn a BA in Hospitality Management at Kendall.

About the Culinary Certificates Program

Chicago Cooking School StudentFor those with previous culinary experience or who are looking for a let up when changing careers, Kendall College's certificates can be a shortcut to gaining the necessary education for advancement. They include both basic knowledge and kitchen experience, and classes are held in the evenings. Those receiving a certificate may choose to pursue careers in baking, catering, or as a personal chef. These four-quarter programs are available for Baking and Pastry, Professional Catering/Personal Chef, and Professional Cookery.

About the Les Roches School of Hospitality Management Program

In addition to culinary degrees and certificates, Kendall is the only school in the U.S. to offer the Les Roches School of Hospitality Management curriculum. With concentrations in Hotel Management, Convention and Meeting Management, and Food and Beverage Management, it focuses on both the "Art of Hospitality" and the "Science of Management."This is done with a combined emphasis on marketing, HR, technology, and more, and the program also includes an internship. The curriculum goes so far as to include design elements and foreign-language training.

Accreditation

Kendall College is affiliated with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). It is also accredited through the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Accrediting Commission and the Illinois State Board of Education.

Financial Aid

Approximately 87% of students at Kendall College receive some form of financial aid. Both need-based and merit-based aid are available to Kendall students. In addition to grants, loans, and scholarships, there are also work study positions available. The Financial Aid department will assign prospective students with a Financial Aid Advisor to help them and their families apply for the best package available.

Faculty

The expert faculty at Kendall College come from a variety of backgrounds. The American Culinary Federation, Inc. bestowed the 2007 Central Regional Educator of the Year Award on executive chef/program chair Michael Artlip. Faculty are encouraged to join students in co-curricular experiences, and with a student-to-faculty ratio of 19 to 1, there is plenty of opportunity for personal attention and interaction.

Facilities

The 166,000 square foot, eight-story tower of the Riverworks Campus was renovated in 1999 when it was a research facility for the Sara Lee Corporation. The site includes multiple kitchens and wireless classrooms. The state-of-the-art equipment utilized by the school ensures that students get the most up-to-date educational experience. Additionally, the school's location in downtown Chicago adds a diverse culinary backdrop for the aspiring chef.
