Houston is the largest city in Texas, with a population of over 2 million. Houston has historically been a seaport and railroad center and is still one of the largest ports in the world. After oil was discovered in 1901 it became—and still is—a petroleum production center. Houston is also home to the world’s largest healthcare and medical research center, Texas Medical Center.
Houston is the fourth most populous city in the United States and is home to a diverse culture and rapidly expanding international community. For instance, the metropolitan area includes an estimated 1.1 million residents who were born outside the United States. A variety of annual festival and events celebrate the eclectic and diverse mix of people inhabiting the Houston area.
