About The Art Institute of Michigan
The Michigan campus is a branch of the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago. It was opened in 2007 to meet the local need for trained culinary, fashion, graphic, and media arts professionals. As a member of the Art Institute brand, the recently-built school brings all the values of the 35-year-old educational institution to a new, modern setting.
The school is designed to create graduates in all fields who are able to actively compete in the current job market while staying true to building the skills necessary for life-long career growth.
The campus offers three degree programs: a certificate in Professional Baking and Pastry, an Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts, and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Culinary Management. Although they offer varying educational goals, all three strive to provide students with basic skills training a well as problem-solving and creative thinking.
About the Professional Baking and Pastry Program
The certificate in Professional Baking and Pastry program is the shortest of the three. It encompasses 36 credit-hours and prepares students for entry-level work in bakeries and cake decorating facilities. In addition to basic kitchen skills, there is a focus on the techniques necessary for bread making, dessert composition, and event decoration.
About the Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts Program
The Associate of Applied Science in Culinary Arts program trains students to work their way through entry-level positions in a 96 quarter-credit time frame. Courses include basic techniques, safety and sanitation, international cuisine, and professional ethics. The training includes classroom time, hands-on work in kitchen laboratories, field trips, and externships.
About the Bachelor of Applied Science in Culinary Management Program
The Bachelor of Applied Science in Culinary Management program is a four-year course that teaches students the inner workings of a food service establishment. In addition to the basics provided in the AAS program, these courses include management training, research and development, customer service, finances, law, and inventory control. It also includes an externship that provides real-world training in a modern kitchen setting.
Accreditation
The Art Institute is recognized by the state of Michigan, giving it the authority to offer Bachelor and Associate degrees. As a branch of the Institute of Art in Chicago, the school enjoys accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. This partnership also gives it accreditation by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology.
Financial Aid
The school fully accepts financial aid through the federal and state FAFSA programs. Scholarships and private loans may also apply. Students who need more information on applying for aid or finding funding for school have access to the Financial Aid Department at any time.
Faculty
As with all Art Institute locations, chef-instructors are chosen for their experience in the culinary field as well as their commitment to teaching. They bring years of experience in working in the front of the house and kitchens of successful restaurants. They teach through a combination of hands-on learning and theoretical lectures.
Facilities
As one of the newest Art Institutes in the United States, the kitchen facilities at the International Culinary School in Michigan are completely modern and up-to-date. Although classical techniques are taught, the school boasts commercial utensils and equipment to give students a feel for what it means to work in a real kitchen.

Novi, Michigan is a suburb of Detroit. It is located a mere 25 miles from the city, giving it a smaller feel while still offering all the amenities of a larger city.
