About University of Phoenix

The school first opened its doors over 30 years ago. The original purpose behind a Phoenix education was to allow working adults the opportunity to get technological training and advanced professional skills without requiring a traditional college degree.

Online Hospitality Management StudentSince then, the school has become a much more academically rigorous institution, with a focus on offering everything from Associate degrees to Doctoral degrees. Equally important to the University of Phoenix, however, is that the education offered is done so on a flexible basis, with students having the option of on-site courses (in select areas), night classes, and learning on a personal schedule.

The University of Phoenix is the largest for-profit institution in the United States. It is run privately, having first been established by Cambridge graduate Dr. John Sperling in the 1970s.

There are currently over 200 physical locations around the world, and a large portion of the total degree options available on-site are also available online. However, due to the nature of some programs, there are a few courses that are limited in their scope online. All students should consider the format of the courses they'd like to take before signing up for a specific program.

Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (Online)

The only culinary-based program available through the University of Phoenix online is the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management degree. This program is a primarily business-based course, with a focus on the skills necessary to succeed in any business industry. To this end, students start with 60 credits of core courses in general business management, communication skills, critical thinking, organizational behavior, diversity, the global business community, and technology. These are rounded off with direct skills training in the hospitality industry.

Upon graduation, students are prepared to enter into the management side of the hospitality trade. Employment opportunities for graduates of this course range in everything from small inns and bed and breakfasts to larger hotel chains and event facilities. These are made possible through classes in lodging management, beverage operations, event planning, recreation planning, and facilities management – all of which are taken on an elective basis so that students get the education that is best suited for their future career goals.

Accreditation

The University of Phoenix is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, which grants it regional accreditation status and allows students to transfer credits to most universities and colleges in the United States. The school is also a member of the North Central Association.

Financial Aid

Students may be eligible for financial aid, provided they find and secure funding according to traditional methods. This includes filling out the required FAFSA forms for federal and state funding, applying for private loans through independent financial institutions, searching for scholarships, and contacting employers for tuition reimbursement. The school also offers a flexible “pay as you go” plan for students paying their own way through school.

Faculty

All faculty members are chosen for their real-world professional experience. They are expected to hold advanced degrees in their field, and they use a combination of their academic backgrounds and their professional contacts to further the skills development of all their students. Each program's curriculum is devised by a panel of experts whose task it is to keep each class relevant and up-to-date with current industry standards.

Facilities

Because most courses are offered online, the University of Phoenix has developed a wide range of online resources to create a “virtual college” atmosphere. All students have access to the school's online library, can order electronic textbooks, and have the option of using the interactive platforms for communication with instructors and other students.
