About The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone
With a history that spans over 60 years, the Culinary Institute of America has been a leader in culinary education and training for decades. In 1946, it opened its doors under the name New Haven Restaurant Institute of Connecticut. It was meant to provide vocational training to WWII veterans and started with a total of 50 students.
Just one year later, it was moved to a building next to Yale University and given a new name. The title Culinary Institute of America wasn't bestowed until 1951. The current location – a former Jesuit seminary in St. Helena - was purchased in 1970, and now teaches thousands of students each year.
The school is “dedicated to providing the world's best professional culinary education.” It goes beyond culinary training to include professionalism, ethics, and leadership. It is recognized for the overall quality of students it produces; in fact, over 300 restaurants and companies actively recruit graduates for employment.
There are two culinary arts programs offered through the CIA - Greystone: a Bachelor Degree in Culinary Arts Management, an Associate's degree in Culinary Arts, and a Certificate in Baking and Pastry Arts.
Baking & Pastry Arts - Certificate
Available at The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone as a Certificate program, the Baking & Pastry Arts Curriculum is designed to give graduates the basic skills need in order to understand the fine art of patisserie. A hands-on course of study, the Certificate in Baking & Pastry Arts program is an in-depth look at the exciting world of baking and pastry, including production methods and recipes. Culinary Arts - Associate in Occupational Studies
A program the can be completed in 21 months or less, the Associate of Occupational Studies in Culinary Arts degree from The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone is designed to give students hands-on training in this exciting field. As the AOS in Culinary Arts curriculum includes an 18-week externship, and 1,300 hours in the kitchen, it's no stretch of the imagination to say the CIA students will gain an in-depth knowledge of culinary techniques in this program. Coursework also includes cost control, menu development, world cuisines/ingredients, cooking techniques, and interpersonal communication.
The school is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which makes it recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. It is also accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology.
A variety of Financial Aid programs are available at CIA at Greystone. With an estimated 90 percent of students receive financial aid in some form, the staff of the Financial Aid Department is prepared to work with prospective and current students to help find funding options and apply for aid. Federal funding in the form of grants or loans, private loans, and scholarships are accepted for those who qualify.
